Love how you analyzed Google Trends for popular DJs. I'm pretty sure I know what you're getting at with the birthdates. It's a reference to Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. The kids born in the beginning of the year (Jan-Mar) and join, say hockey camp for 11 year olds, have almost an entire year of physical and emotional growth over the 11-year-old kids in the same league born in December. Furthermore, the kids born in Sep-Dec have an advantage because they are the oldest amongst their classmates because the school year starts in September. Therefore, from childhood, these two groups have a competitive advantage over their classmates and league mates and this advantage accumulates over time. Add that advantage to talent and grit (see: 10,000 hour rule from Gladwell), and you have a superstar in the making.

Re: If You Aren’t Producing, Get Started Producing Music

Done iT **

Re: If You Aren’t Producing, Get Started Producing Music

I don't it, lots of tutorials and now I have a few singles under my belt on Beatport!

Re: Becoming A DJ Outlier: What You Need Is Jet Fuel

Troll

Re: Becoming A DJ Outlier: What You Need Is Jet Fuel

I think the point the article is trying to make is that it takes time. Most of these artists did not begin booming (at least in the U.S. markets until 2009-2011). If you look at their birthdates, they would have all been well into their 20s, 30s, and even close to 40 by the time they broke out as artist. The time to make proper connections and perfect your craft is an inevitable part of the journey. When I hear DJs ask questions to big DJs and Producers they rarely want to hear how long it took to get to where these people are. Take a look at even turntablist type DJs who have recently gained a great deal of success. DJs such as JayCeeOh and Chris Karns exploded after master of the mix but those guys aren't young. They have been well ahead of the curve in terms of skills for at least a decade. Their appearances on Master of the Mix has finally allowed their skill to meet the proper media juggernaut to properly distribute and sell their talent. Even older DJs such as Z Trip have spent ages and ages building a solid niche fan base. The growth of a DJs career is longer than any other sort of musical artist I would argue but if done right, these guys are proving that what the DJs career lacks in overnight speed it makes up for in stability. Fascinating read.

Re: Becoming A DJ Outlier: What You Need Is Jet Fuel

Their parents all got it on in the summer.... is there a part of this article thats missing? There has been tons of recent debate about how so few DJs "open" well or burn the DJs the follow them in lineups by exhausting all of the Top 40 hits. There has been tons of advice on how DJs can do a better job at "opening" but all of the articles and complaints have I read have not gotten to the heart of the issue. These newer DJs don't know how to "dig" for music even though digging is as easy and as important as ever. How can you expect a group of DJs DJing in a lineup not to step on each other's toes and not burn each other when their rotation of music they are playing is essentially the same and shallow. I tell young DJs all the time that their articles and videos for everything under the sun in terms of Marketing and DJing, DJing techniques, and software/technical guides. Noone can teach you how to dig for music but you have to. You can't put your own DJ stamp that so many DJs have that we love without doing this work. Heck, even if you dive into production from DJing you can't expect to ooze originality if you don't have the fuel of thousands of records to inspire you. This is what makes DJs like Jazzy Jeff, Craze, A-Trak, etc. great, I tune into Craze's bi-monthly Ustream and it simply amazes me how much new stuff he brings to the table every show. Without that new content to play with and manipulate we would all be worthless as DJs.
